Also audio card specific, I'm guessing.Audacity (R) is a free, easy-to-use and multilingual audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.

Perhaps the Windows 98 playback/recording controls work differently, but it seems like you should be able to specify WAV input. Just to clarify, it's Options->Windows Mixer in Cool Edit, which pops up a Windows audio control, from which it's then Options->Properties. I'll have a play on one of my test computers and see if that's any better!

Maybe I should try installing CoolEdit 2000 on Vista - because on my Win98SE system at least, I don't even have "Properties" menu entry under "Options" furthermore, if I try loading (say) Finale 2005 and CoolEdit 2000 together, my MMSYSTEM drivers complain! I think a previous system did not, but "Wave" achieves the same result. What's shown on the resulting recording control again probably varies from sound card to sound card. I have to switch to the recording controls via the arcane sequence I suspect the controls this brings up vary from system to system, but on mine it displays the playback controls. The way to record Finale playback or streaming data is to use Options->Windows Mixer.

In this case, your sound card will probably have a similar option that is called something else.įinale 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011b.r2 (using 2011b.r2)Ĭore i7 860 2.80 GHz, 8.0 GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 圆4 SP 1īrian, I have Cool Edit 2000. Audacity records "what you hear." Your sound card determines the recording options you have, so you might not see a "what you hear" recording option. I've used Audacity for years because I have noticed differences between Finale's "export to audio" results and Audacity's "what you hear" recording results-that is, I start Audacity's recording and then I play back a Finale file.

Laptop HP Quad core with 16 gigs of ram, Windows 7 Home PremiumĪudacity is a free program in which you can edit and record sounds. So while I keep Cool Edit for reasons of familiarity and comfort, had Audacity been around in those days, I'd have plumped for the latter straight up! But Audacity works across all my machines, and has additional features (like recording parallel tracks, timeshifting them, mixing them, etc).Īnd crucially: that amazing feature that lets Audacity record directly from the soundcard output stream, which is what enables it to record anything your computer is trying to play, in real time, including Finale output and any media stream you might want to keep. I still have both on my Win98SE machine, and both work great. In fact I bought two versions, version 1.53 for Windows 3.1 (1996), and version 2000 for Windows 95/98SE (2000!). Me too - Cool Edit was (er, IS) an excellent editor.

I've used Cool Edit, which eventually became Adobe Auditon, for years, and Audacity seems comparable. Maybe I was doing some editing, and was unhappy with the splices? "As a musician, he's a damn fine woodworker." That's my system, and I'm stickin' to it. WebMaster and bass for the Seattle SeaChordsmen FINALE TIPS at Finale 2010, 2011, 2012 on Mac 10.7 Ron, are you sure you knew about Audacity when you bought the other? "Music: incredibly easy to understand on a basic level, but profoundly difficult to speak with any fluency." I love music, and anything that interrupts music, I hate." Laptop: Intel Dual Core 2 gig ram, Windows 7 Just curious how you guys think acoustica compares? I can't remember why I felt it necessary to spend 30 or 40 dollars to buy it a few years ago, knowing that audacity is free.ĭesktop: Intel Dual Core 2.MB ram, Vista Home Bassist/composer/arranger/conductor/bandleader
